Qualifications

 Grade 12;
 Bachelors Degree / Diploma in Animal Health or other related fields;

 

Experience

 2 years in Wildlife or Zoo nutrition;
 Atleast 3 years in Supervisory or Management positions;

Job Outputs

 Maintain a high standard dietary management through accurate preparation and distribution of relevant diets within the Zoo;
 Liasing with staff to increase and promote the understanding of the effect of diet of health, wellbeing and productivity of animals;
 Evaluating the chemical and Nutritional value feeds, feed supplements, grass and forage for all animals
 Researching the effectiveness of dietary regimes and conducting animal based studies;
 Assessing the relative nutritional and economical value of feeding systems;
 Monitoring feed formulations to meet quality performance and animal health standards;
 Place all foods in well marked and locked containers where required;
 Investigating Nutritional disorders;
 Ensuring that all animal kitchen and butchery equipments including fridges and freezers are fully operational;
 Participate in preparing administering and reviewing animal feed;
 Budget Management;
 Advise Curators, Keepers and Veterinarian on Nutrition;
 Daily liaison with suppliers;
 Manage day to day operations of animal kitchen and feed stores;
 Investigating nutritional disorders;

Aquarist Keeper
Animal Collections Department

Inherent Job Requirements

 

Qualifications

 Nature Conservation Diploma, Zoological or Biological Degree;
 Valid commercial Class 5 or higher diving certificate;
 Drivers License with own transport.

 

Experience

 At least 3 verifiable years of experience working as an Aquarist in an Aquarium or working with Aquatic exhibits;
Specific Skills and Knowledge

 Applicants must have an up –to date commercial diving log book listing own dive work experience;
 Applicants must be competent swimmers, including swimming unassisted in deep water (3m plus) as well as possess a reasonable degree of competence with regard to breath-hold diving;
 Sound and demonstrable knowledge of advances Aquatic life support systems including pumps, mechanical and UV filtration;
 Ability to build, modify and repair circulation systems using pvc pipe plumbing;
 Knowledge of basic electrical skills to a DYI level;
 Good written and verbal communication skills including presentations to the public;
 Excellent supervisory and interpersonal skills;
 Computer literacy skills (Windows environment, Power point, Internet & Social media);
 Ability to enter and exit aquatic exhibits unassisted, to lift 20kg and to work in high temperatures (28˚C plus), humid or dusty environments and elevated or enclosed spaces.

 Must be an active member of the Amphibian Conservation Project;
Job Outputs

• Maintain all acrylic panels in first class condition;
• Maintain and improve exhibits, back-of house and other areas of responsibility to international standards;
• Carry out the renovation of existing displays and the development and fabrication of new exhibits;
• Monitor the dietary habits of the animals and ensure that good nutrition is maintained;
• Carry out reproduction of exhibits and feeder species and cultures;
• Maintain plants in the exhibits and propagate back-up specimens;
• Observe and report abnormal behavior daily;
• Assist the veterinary department with procedures and the administration of preventative medicine, drugs and treatment;
• Acquire new specimen in order to complete and improve the collection;
• Ensure that Life Support Systems in their areas of responsibility are functioning properly maintained correctly and improved wherever possible;
• Understand water quality parameters, the techniques used to measure them, and be able to interpreted results,
• Monitor trends and manipulate water chemistry as necessary;
• Compliance with health and safety standards;
• Develop professional contracts within the industry in order to improve husbandry practices and stay abreast of new developments;
• Ensure that all mortalities are autopsied as soon as possible and that all necessary documentation is timeously completed in this regard;
• Keep accurate, up-to-date husbandry records, fill in and sign of off all exhibit checklists daily and ensure that the necessary reports are submitted timeously;
• Maintain an up to date collection inventory, and ensure that ARKS records are correct;
• Submit monthly reports and purchase plans as well as annual husbandry manuals;
• Source and maintain suppliers, and ensure that the supply chain management protocols are correctly followed;
• Conduct tours and Lectures for members of the public and other interest groups;
• Keeping equipment safe, clean, serviceable and in a good state of repair.
• Adhere strictly to safe diving practices and keep all relevant documentation up to date;

Qualifications

 Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Biology, Veterinary Sciences, Business Administration or other related fields.

Experience

 At least 5 years’ experience in Zoo keeping and Management;
 Background in Management and Animal welfare is advantageous
Specific Skills and Knowledge

 Extensive knowledge in wildlife management procedures and protocols;
 Understanding of the needs and habits of the different types of animals in the zoological collection;
 Basic knowledge in veterinary medicine;
 Ability to develop and organize fascinating zoological exhibits;
 Ability to manage an aquarium;
 Ability to conduct interesting and instructive tours;
 Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
 Advanced report writing skills;
 Advanced management skills;
 Business Management;
 Management of animal collection and staff members.

 

Job Outputs

 Provide general management of all zoo activities;
 Prepare, administer and review the Zoo budget annually & quarterly;
 Ensures that the Zoo complies with all local and international laws/ standards related to its operations;
 Manages the day-to-day operations, and assures a smooth functioning, efficient Zoo operations;
 Implementation of policies approved by the JCPZ Board of Directors;
 Improve procedures and goals, assigning responsibilities and schedules,
 Conducting employee evaluations, maintaining inventories and Zoological specimens;
 Overseeing the design and restoration of enclosure, exhibits, Aquarium and directing overall facility maintenance;
 Developing sales strategies, promotional events and fund raising activities;
 Handling and responding public questions and complaints and direct them to relevant JCPZ departments;
 Consulting with veterinarians and establishing animal care such as handling methods, dietary needs, habitat, and sanitation procedures;
 Quality and organizational stability through development and implementation of standards and controls, systems and procedure, and regular evaluation;
 Making decisions involving animal husbandry, diets, veterinary care, quarantine procedures, enrichment activities, animal transportation and research projects, selection and acquisition of new animal’s for the collection, completion of zoo records and incorporating information from animal keepers and reports.
